While cats and dogs have been known to become infected with avian influenza, the exact mode of the infection is unclear. It is assumed that these animals become infected with the virus when they ate poultry or wild birds which were infected with the avian influenza. It is unknown if cats and dogs can then spread the virus to one another, but for now this type of transmission is considered to be unlikely.

In areas of Asia, Africa, and Europe, cats that have been exposed to poultry flocks that were infected with avian influenza tested positive for the virus. It is assumed that the cats were killing and eating some of the infected poultry, though it is still in question whether all of the cats became infected in this way. Many of the cats that tested positive for the virus were already in declining health from poor diet and other types of respiratory viruses, and it is not known if underlying medical problems increases their chances of becoming infected with the virus.

Only in rare cases have dogs been known to become infected with avian influenza, and most of the studies of dogs which tested positive for avian influenza were performed in dogs which were infected with the virus for laboratory studies. So it is not known if dogs are really susceptible to this virus in nature. While there have been a handful of reports which indicate dogs may have become infected from the virus from eating birds which carried the virus, there is still much that remains unknown about how dogs may become infected with avian influenza.

There are 3 types of influenza viruses: types A, B, and C. Influenza A viruses infect humans and many different animals. Influenza B viruses only circulate among humans and cause seasonal epidemics. Influenza C viruses can infect both humans and pigs but infections are generally mild and are rarely reported.

Influenza type A viruses are classified into subtypes according to the combinations of different virus surface proteins haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). There are 18 different haemagglutinin subtypes and 11 different neuraminidase subtypes. Depending on the origin host, influenza A viruses can be classified as avian influenza, swine influenza, or other types of animal influenza viruses. Examples include avian influenza "bird flu" virus subtypes A(H5N1) and A(H9N2) or swine influenza "swine flu" virus subtypes A(H1N1) and A(H3N2). All of these animal influenza type A viruses are distinct from human influenza viruses and do not easily transmit between humans.

Aquatic birds are the primary natural reservoir for most subtypes of influenza A viruses. Most cause asymptomatic or mild infection in birds, where the range of symptoms depends on the virus properties. Viruses that cause severe disease in birds and result in high death rates are called highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Viruses that cause outbreaks in poultry but are not generally associated with severe disease are called low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI).

Bird flu is a kind of influenza that is caused by viruses, which are adapted to the avian species, i.e. birds. This kind of avian influenza is also known as avian flu. It is generally caused by the different influenza virus strains that are adapted to a specific host. This kind of influenza is similar to that of dog flu, horse flu or human flu.

The different virus that causes bird flu in the birds belongs to the species of Influenza A. All the subtypes of these viruses, however, have been adapted to the avian species. Bird flu is caused by the H5N1 virus strain, which is a subtype of the Influenza, A virus. However, the H5N1 strain virus that causes bird flu is known as HPAI A (H5N1). This virus strain has caused epidemic in different species of bird. However, apart from other avian species it can also affect other animals.

The most common symptom of bird flu is fever. A person suffering from bird flu can have temperature above 100°F. Apart from fever a person suffering from bird flu will have cough which is similar to the normal flu symptom. However, a person who is affected with bird flu will pass on the virus along with the cough.

Avian influenza A virus infection in humans cannot be diagnosed by clinical signs and symptoms alone; laboratory testing is required. Avian influenza A virus infection is usually diagnosed by collecting a swab from the nose or throat of the sick person during the first few days of illness. This specimen is sent to a lab; the laboratory looks for avian influenza A virus either by using a molecular test, by trying to grow the virus, or both. (Growing avian influenza A viruses should only be done in laboratories with high levels of protection).

CDC has posted guidance for clinicians and public health professionals in the United States on appropriate testing, specimen collection and processing of samples from patients who may be infected with novel influenza A viruses.

CDC currently recommends oseltamivir, peramivir, or zanamivir for treatment of human infection with avian influenza A viruses. Analyses of available avian influenza viruses circulating worldwide suggest that most viruses are susceptible to oseltamivir, peramivir, and zanamivir. However, some evidence of antiviral resistance has been reported in HPAI Asian H5N1 viruses and influenza A H7N9 viruses isolated from some human cases. Monitoring for antiviral resistance among avian influenza A viruses is crucial and ongoing. These data directly inform CDC and WHO antiviral treatment recommendations.

As a virulent avian influenza outbreak continues to spread across the Midwestern United States, some egg-dependent companies are contemplating drastic steps - importing eggs from overseas or looking to egg alternatives. 

A spokeswoman for Archer Daniels Midland Co said that as egg supplies tighten and prices rise, the food processing and commodities company has received numerous inquiries from manufacturers about the plant-based egg substitutes it makes.

"The U.S. has never imported any significant amount of eggs, because we've always been a very low-cost producer," said Tom Elam of FarmEcon, an agricultural consulting company. "Now, that's no longer the case."

Bird flu is an infection caused by a certain kind of avian influenza virus.
