The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 legalised full same-sex marriage in England and Wales starting from March 2014, although civil partnership also remains available. Later in 2014 it granted those in a civil partnership in England or Wales the ability to convert their partnership into a marriage. The equivalent Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2014 does not grant that ability, but includes provision for its later introduction, and does permit those already in civil partnership with one another to marry without first dissolving the mutual civil partnership.

Civil partnership registration can take place at a  registration office ,  approved venue  or any religious premise approved as a venue for civil partnerships.  There are not currently any religious premises approved for the registration of civil partnerships within Cornwall.

A civil partnership is registered once the couple have signed the civil partnership document (the schedule) in the presence of a registrar and two witnesses.

There are words printed on the document which the couple will be able to say at the time of signing the document, but the couple are not legally required to say any words - there is therefore no prescribed ceremony that you have to go through - it is the signing of the schedule which makes the process legally recognised.

The Bishop of Leicester,Rt Rev Tim Stevens, has said that gay marriage goes a step beyond what is really needed at the moment because it suggests there is complete uniformity between men and women in terms of the kinds of relationship that they make.

The Home Office has published a consultation, setting out the government's proposals to enable same-sex couples to have a civil marriage. Current legislation allows same-sex couples to enter into a civil partnership, but not civil marriage.

British actor and equality advocate Simon Callow has said that same-sex marriage was a "natural extension" of gay rights and that if civil partnerships were acceptable, then "marriage should also be acceptable".

A civil union , also referred to by a variety of other names, is a legally recognized arrangement similar to marriage . These unions have been established in a number of countries since the late 1990s, often developing from less formal domestic partnership legislation. In Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, they have since been replaced, and in a number of other countries supplemented, by same-sex marriage . Civil unions are often seen by campaigners as a "first step" towards legalizing marriage for same-sex couples . While civil unions are predominantly established for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples, in a number of countries they are available to same-sex couples only.

The Isle of Man is the only place within the British Isles where same sex and opposite sex couples can both enter into civil partnerships. Couples who register a civil partnership will acquire the legal status of 'civil partners' and gain similar rights and responsibilities to those of a married couple.

Any two persons, regardless of sex, can register a civil partnership provided they are not legally married, already in a civil partnership or come under the prohibited degrees of relationship. The minimum age to register a civil partnership on the Isle of Man is 16. If you are aged 16 or 17, you will need to provide written proof of consent to the registration from your parent(s) and/or guardian(s). If your parents are divorced, we may also need to see the Court Order granting custody to one of them.

Unlike a marriage, there is no legal requirement to have a ceremony or speak aloud any contractual words. A civil partnership must be registered in the presence of a Registrar and a minimum of two witnesses. If you wish to celebrate the occasion with family and friends, you can have a ceremony at the Civil Registry , a registration office , an Approved Place or place granted consent of the Chief Registrar . It is possible to convert your civil partnership to a marriage at a later date if you wish.

There has been no change to the rights and status of EU nationals in the UK, and UK nationals in the EU , as a result of the referendum.
